Life at the Mission (San Miguel Arcángel) - Original Painting 16" x 20" Oil on Canvas

I painted this from a reference picture I took visiting Mission San Miguel Arcangel. This charming mission, with its arches large pond and gardens, I found the cemetery to be an interesting little corner of the mission. 

In this painting I added a lizard, alert with a focused stare at the cross. A Lizard, in many indigenous tribes and cultures around the world is symbolic to life, considered to be a very lucky and auspicious creature according to spiritual beliefs. It is said that when it crosses your path, the indication is towards something good that might happen in the coming times.  

It's ironic to see the lizard stare intensely at the cross where in the Christian culture the cross is symbolic to death. What must be going through the lizards mind? It's a reminder that we must eventually all face death. We all need a lizard to cross our path and live our best life possible with all the good surrounding us..
